Form checkpoints

Three cues to take into your next set

  • Make one line from head to heel
  • Bring the chest to the edge
  • Press the surface away at the top

How to do it

  1. 1

Place hands on a stable surface slightly wider than shoulders.

  2. 2

Walk feet back into a straight line from head to heel.

  3. 3

Lower your chest toward the edge with elbows angled back.

  4. 4

Press the surface away and finish with shoulder blades moving naturally.

Breathing

Inhale as the chest moves toward the surface. Exhale while pressing away without losing trunk position.

Programming

Use 2–4 sets of 5–15 controlled repetitions. Stop the set when the hips sag or the pressing range shortens.

Common mistakes

Hips sagging
Elbows flaring straight out
Using an unstable surface

Make it easier

Use a higher, stable surface such as a wall or counter to reduce the amount of body weight being moved.

Make it harder

Move to a lower surface, add a brief pause at the bottom, or progress toward a floor push-up.

Variations and alternatives

  • Wall push-up
  • Bench push-up
  • Floor push-up

Frequently asked questions

Is the incline push-up beginner-friendly?

This variation is rated beginner. Start with a comfortable range and resistance, and use a more stable variation if technique changes.

A common starting point is 2 sets of 6–12 controlled repetitions, but programming depends on the movement, goal and individual capacity.
