Form checkpoints
Three cues to take into your next set
- Close a car door with your hips
- Keep the dumbbells near your legs
- Stop when the hamstrings limit the hinge
How to do it
- 1
Stand tall with dumbbells beside your thighs.
- 2
Soften the knees and send the hips back.
- 3
Keep weights close as your torso tips forward.
- 4
Stop before your back position changes, then squeeze the floor and stand.
Breathing
Inhale and brace before sending the hips back. Exhale as you stand, then take a new breath before the next repetition.
Programming
Use 2–4 sets of 6–12 repetitions with enough rest to maintain grip and a controlled back position.
Common mistakes
Make it easier
Practice the hinge with hands on the hips or use a wall behind you as a target before adding dumbbells.
Make it harder
Add load, use a slower lowering phase, try a kickstand stance, or progress to a barbell Romanian deadlift.
Variations and alternatives
