How to Preserve Muscle During GLP-1 Weight Loss

An evidence-informed plan for resistance training, protein, recovery and progress tracking during weight loss.

Updated July 30, 2026 10 min read

Some lean mass is typically lost during weight loss. Progressive strength training, adequate protein and a manageable rate of loss can help preserve function and muscle.

What to know

  • Strength train major muscle groups at least twice weekly when appropriate.
  • Spread protein across meals you tolerate.
  • Track strength and function, not scale weight alone.

Train for a reason

Resistance exercise tells the body that muscle is useful. Choose stable movements you can perform well and add repetitions, resistance or sets gradually.

Make protein easier

When appetite is low, lead meals with a protein-rich food and use smaller, protein-dense options. Needs vary with body size, age, activity and kidney health, so personalize the target with a clinician or dietitian.

Recover enough to adapt

Training works best with sleep, hydration and rest days. If fatigue or dizziness changes exercise tolerance, reduce intensity and speak with your care team.

Cover the major movement patterns

A simple program can include a squat or sit-to-stand, hip hinge, push, pull, carry, and trunk exercise. Stable variations make it easier to train the intended muscles and track progress without turning every session into a test.

Use performance as a useful signal

Record loads, repetitions, walking pace, and how everyday tasks feel. A slowing scale paired with steadier strength may be more useful than chasing the fastest possible weekly loss.

Make low-appetite meals count

When portions are small, begin with the protein-rich part of the meal and include produce and an energy source as tolerated. Persistent difficulty meeting needs deserves individualized help rather than a more restrictive plan.
