The hormone signal

GLP-1 is an incretin hormone released after eating. It helps the pancreas release insulin when glucose is elevated, reduces glucagon and sends fullness signals. Medicines designed around this pathway last longer than native GLP-1.

Why appetite may change

Many people report earlier fullness and less food noise. The effect is not identical for everyone, and pushing food intake too low can make it harder to meet protein, fiber and micronutrient needs.

What the medicine cannot do alone

Medication does not automatically preserve muscle, improve cardiorespiratory fitness or build sustainable routines. Resistance training, adequate protein, sleep and follow-up remain important parts of care.

Single- and dual-receptor medicines

Semaglutide-based medicines act at the GLP-1 receptor. Tirzepatide acts at both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. That difference helps explain why brand names are not interchangeable even when they are discussed together as incretin-based medicines.

Approved use comes before the nickname

A diabetes medicine and a chronic weight-management medicine may contain the same active ingredient but have different labels, doses, and eligibility criteria. Use the specific product label—not a social-media category—to understand what a prescription is approved to treat.

Questions to bring to an appointment

Ask which diagnosis the prescription is intended to treat, how the dose will be increased, which side effects should prompt a call, and how other medicines affect the plan. Also discuss what follow-up will measure beyond body weight, such as symptoms, glucose, nutrition, or function when relevant.
